In my last post I mentioned that we are at Fort Knox, KY for a week, so yesterday (Friday) we drove the 60+ miles to Cave City to experience Mammoth Cave. Experience it we did!!!!
First let me mention that everything here in Kentucky is so green and beautiful! Must be all the rains here this spring, but now suddenly the temps are in the 90’s! I guess we brought the heat along with us from Oke NWR!
To experience Mammoth Cave you must go down into the cave…….duh!!! So we chose the Historic Tour which was rated as Difficulty: Moderate!! But being the intrepid explorers that we are we headed down into the main entrance to the cave.
The tour is listed as: 2 hours, total steps:440 including 155 steps at the Mammoth dome, elevation change 300 ‘. Bill says it will be a easy walk in the park!! I don’t know what parks he’s been to but I have never been to park like this!
In addition to lots and lots of steps there are lots of “duck-unders” and several “slide-thoughs” including one area called “Fat Man’s Misery”.
News flash: fat women are in misery also!!
Don’tcha love the “deer in the headlights” looks when flashed in a dark cave!!! Hard to take pictures as everything outside your little circle of light is absolute and total darkness!!!
I forgot to mention that it was 88 degrees outside when we entered the cave which is a consistent 54 degrees…..note the gal in the hooded sweatshirt!
Yay…..daylight and the way out!!!
We (mostly me) were exhausted after the climb out of the cave, but happy we did it and spend some time just patting ourselves on the back for doing the tour without needing oxygen or a medic to haul us out!!!
After a lunch at the Travertine CafĂ© we headed back through Cave City which has a lot of amusement park type things to do there. such as Dinosaur Village…
……I really liked this guy peeking out over the trees!
Also spotted this……hmmmm! Yes, I would say so!!!
Now a few of the flowers I found on the outing!! You know how I love flowers!
Also here is picture Bill got of one of the groundhogs who live in the RV park.
Just Us Kids…….looking for more adventures on the road north!

Kay, you always make me laugh! I've seen the TV show about that cave. I can just imagine you two climbing through it. I'd probably be huffing and puffing also.... I'm not big on calisthenics, although I COULD use more exercise. Well, off to an embroidery class, I better run!
