Kentucky Bourbon Trail

Exploring caves is not the only thing to do in this area of Kentucky, touring bourbon distilleries is also a popular tourist attraction. So who are we to not do what the tourists are supposed to do here!!!!

Now first I must explain, neither one of us drinks bourbon or any other alcoholic beverage!!! Bill can’t because of his RA medication and I don’t like the taste of it….but what the heck….a free tour is a free tour!!!

90% of all bourbon is made right here in Kentucky and bourbon is made no where else in the world other than the United States. Within about a 60 mile radius there are  6 bourbon distilleries: Maker’s Mark, Four Roses, Heaven Hill, Jim Beam, Wild Turkey, and Woodford Reserve. We chose Maker’s Mark to tour only because Bill’s brother, Dave, drinks it.

It turned out to be the best choice as we got to see the entire process from the cooking of the mash in huge vats to the bottling of the final clear amber bourbon. Maker’s Mark goes the step further and dips the cap and neck of the bottle in red wax.

Of course the tour ended in the tasting room!!! We both did try a sip, Bill said he wasn’t going to see the stuff made and not taste it! I tried a sip and confirmed the fact that I do not like bourbon, however I really enjoyed the tour.

If you buy a bottle of Maker’s Mark you get to dip it yourself in the wax to seal it!!! Yes, we did, but don’t tell Dave…..OK?IMG_3155

The grounds are beautiful just to stroll around, then we had lunch on the grounds at the Tollhouse Café.
