On Tuesday the 31st of May we said our farewells at Okefenokee NWR and headed on up the road . We will miss all the new friendships that we made during our 4-month stay there, especially Colleen, Linda and Jay, Jamie, and newest friends, Matt and Jazmine.
The last month at Oke NWR was very different in that the swamp has been burning since April 28th and is still burning now, which is actually good for the swamp, but really tough on all the firefighters. There is no way to put out the fire in the swamp so all they can do is contain it to the perimeters of the swamp and put out any ‘break-outs’ if the fire tries to get away.
All visitor services have been shut down for the last month and it was really boring, so it was a good time to move on! So move on we did!!!
At the moment we are at Camp Carlson Travel Camp at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Yesterday we visited the George S. Patton Museum on the base. It used to be the Armor Museum in the past but most of the armor have been moved to Fort Benning, but the Patton Museum will stay here. It provided a very interesting insight into the life of a very interesting man.
After our tour of the museum we did some looking around on the base and decided that it is the most confusing base ever, street-wise. We had a map but I think after they printed the map they changed all the street names.
But we did find the National Bullion Depository where all the gold (if we have any left) is stored along with the originals of the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, Lincoln speeches as well as other valuable original US documents. You notice that these pictures were taken from a long distance off as that is about as close as you can get to the building.
Next post……………….Mammoth Cave!!!!
