Hondo, TX to Hammond, LA

We left Hondo on Saturday, right after the Biscuit and Gravy breakfast at the Clubhouse. Every long trip should be started with a good breakfast……..right?

Saturday night we were in The Woodlands, TX to stay a couple nights and visit with our friends, Alanasue and Bob. We had a great time with visits to Willie’s Grill and Icehouse for dinner on Saturday and Olive Garden on Sunday!!

We bid farewell to Alanasue and Bob this morning and headed eastward again. We decided to continue our eating frenzy with donuts in Sour Lake, TX…………….no, we didn’t avail ourselves of the drive-through, but they did have a big parking lot for our motor home and tow-car.

Some more views through the windshield……..

The smallest carnival ever, completely contained in a pick-up truck!IMG_0135

Love the sign in his back window……IMG_0137

Then we left Texas into Louisiana……

Soon we were crossing the Atchafalaya (think jambolaya) Basin, a huge delta formed by the Gulf of Mexico and the Mississippi River.

The highway is built like two really  long bridges over the swamp.

IMG_0167On previous trips we have spent the night in the Welcome Center parking lot, but the center was always closed. So we took advantage of the daylight to visit the center and watch the movie about the refuge and creatures that live there. (Actually reminds us a lot of Okefenokee NWR where we will be volunteering next month.)

Exit to the right and under the bridge to the visitor’s center.

Finally, after and hour and a half in stand-still traffic in Baton IMG_0195Rouge, due to construction and a truck roll-over……we finally got to Hammond, LA where we will stay a couple of nights. We will run into New Orleans tomorrow for a little sight-seeing and a muffalata sandwich for lunch.

It is expected to be in the mid-20’s for the next two nights so we have electricity here so we don’t have to use up all of our propane to keep warm and keep the pipes from freezing.

It feels good to be back on the road……………….!!

Just Us Kids……..runnin’ down the highway!!!
