Tuesday, May 25th we left Cardston, AB and headed northward. The roads were rough with frost heaves but all in all we made good time. Between us we drove just over 600 miles to Grande Prairie, Alberta, where we spent the night in a Husky Truck Plaza.
Along the way we saw a lot of deer and even a bear!
On Wednesday we continued north and west toward Watson Lake, Yukon, another long day over equally rough roads. All the roads are very curvy and mountainous, and the scenery is breathtaking!!
Now we are officially on the Alaska Highway!!!
We stopped for a short hike to Rancheria Falls……….
Bill playing mountain goat again………….!!!
We passed lakes that still had ice on them!
Further on we came down the mountain to cross the river on this long blue bridge, however……………
They were working on the bridge and traffic was backed up half way up the mountain.
We spent the night just west of Watson Lake in a pull off area along side a river where Bill dipped a bucket of water from the river to clean the hordes of bugs from the windshield!!!
Thursday we headed NW to Whitehorse, Yukon……..
Along the way we spotted 5 bears, 2 brown and 3 black, but only got pix of one brown bear.
Also lots of buffalo, caribou, big horn sheep, elk and only one moose in the distance.
The days have become longer, we now have 18 hours of daylight so it is hard to stop when there is so much extra driving light. It is amazing how we are conditioned to light, when it starts to get dark then it is time to sleep. But when it doesn’t get dark at the accustomed times, it plays tricks on the mind. As I am writing this it is 10:30 PM and the sun is still shining!!!!
On Thursday afternoon we arrived in Whitehorse, Yukon, where we checked into the Hi Country RV Park for a couple of nights.
The weather is great, sunshine and in the 70’s everyday.
Next time…………..Whitehorse!!
Stay tuned!
