We arrived in Whitehorse on Thursday, May 27th and checked into the Hi Country RV Park for 2 nights, assuming that we would see all we wanted to see in 2 days………….wrong!!!!
A view of 4th Ave in downtown Whitehorse.
After a visit to Smith House in downtown where we were given a Whitehorse pin and more important, we were given a parking pass so we do not have to feed the parking meters downtown. We then stopped at the Java Connection for coffee and a sandwich which we took across the street to enjoy the lunch-time music in the park.
Of course I had to make a stop at the quilt shop!!!!! I found a couple of patterns for some really neat bags. The ladies in the shop were fun and kept Bill entertained while I drooled over all the beautiful quilts.
On the Alaska Highway you pass the airport and this fabulous, fun sight. A DC 3 mounted as a weather vane. It is a full sized airplane and it is totally awesome to see it moving with the changing winds.
Another sight not to miss is the MV Klondike, which is sitting high and dry now at the end of 4th Ave, on the banks of the Yukon River. But it made many trips up and down the Yukon River hauling all manner of goods to miners and the hearty folk living in the heart of the wilderness. But now after restoration it represents a time gone by.
We heard about a suspension bridge spanning the Yukon River in Miles Canyon, so we set out to find it. It turned out to be a great place to stretch our legs and work out the kinks from the road.
After we crossed the bridge we hiked along the river enjoying the wildflowers and the fantastic views of the river.
Later we heard out about a boat trip up the Yukon River, so we extended our stay at the RV park for another night so we could take the trip the next day.
We went under the same bridge we crossed on our hike the day before.
A huge beaver dam on the river.
Beaver were not the only animals playing in the river.
And at the end of the boat ride there was our little “Suzi” on the bank waiting for us to return.
We went back to the RV park and extended yet another night as we booked a train ride to Skagway in the morning…….but that’s for next time!!!
Just us kids………….!!!!
