After leaving Grants Pass we headed south on I5 and stayed the night in another truck plaza in Weed, CA. Many times we choose to stay at truck stops when traveling as we don’t disturb anyone when we run our generator, as the truckers are running their generators too.
Wed AM we left I5 at Mt. Shasta, CA and headed south on US 89 and checked into the Hereford Ranch RV Park at Hat Creek, CA, just a few miles from Lassen Park. We quickly hooked up the electricity and water, jumped in the car and headed into the park.
After a stop at the Visitor’s Center we decided to drive thru the park to the Bumpass Hell vista and hike the trail up and down to “hell”!!
Notice all the snow!!! It was cold up on the mountain!!!
Critters along the trail:
We called this guy the “Sentinel”!
It is a 1.5 mile in (and a longer 1.5 miles back out again) with a rise of 300 feet and the last half mile of the trail is very steep, descending 250 feet to an active hydrothermal basin. It is an amazing sight, bubbling mudpots, hissing fumaroles, and the very strong smell of sulfur. One of the hissing fumaroles can reach 310 degrees F and sounds like a busy airport runway.
Bill took these amazing shots of the bubbling mudpots.
Now remember my “new knee” is only 4-1/2 months old, so this was a pretty brave undertaking for me. But I made it all the way to Bumpass Hell and back again, slowly at times, but I did it!!!
Of course, Bill did the hike just fine and had to stand around a lot to wait for me to catch up.
Needless to say, neither one of us had any trouble sleeping that night!!!!
This morning we hooked up again and drove to Fallon, NV where we will stay at NAS Fallon for 3 days to do laundry and shopping.

Love, Kimmy
Wow, great pictures! So the mud really does bubble! I think that is one of the places I would like to go visit.
