Benson to ShowLow, AZ

We bid a fond farewell to our friends as we left Benson, AZ this morning and headed west to Willcox, then turned north on US 191. IMG_7289     IMG_7296

We were dressed in shorts and t-shirts as the sun was shining and promised to be warm day. We passed through a few very small towns and stopped for lunch at the Apache Gold Casino just outside Globe, AZ. Looked at all the folks playing the machines, but headed out without putting in a coin!!!!

I love signs, they never really prepare you for what comes next!!!

Soon after Globe we started down into Salt River Canyon…..what a totally awesome sight. IMG_7321

The road twisted, turned, uphill and then down, over and over again!!! John and Nancy had tried to tell us about it, but you have to see it, and drive it, to believe it.

But one of many curves like this!!IMG_7332

Note: Sorry about the spots on the pix, but most of these were shot through the windshield and the bugs were “gathering” there!!

There are 2 bridges at the bottom of the canyon, old and new.

Fantastic views of the Salt River after crossing

the bridge and heading up again.

Stopped to shoot pix and stretch our bones!

IMG_7351

Yep, that’s part of the road we just came down!!!!

IMG_7356

More “fun” roads!

I like this truck!!!!! Click to enlarge and read his sign.

IMG_7333

If the gravel won’t stop you, the granite walls will!!!

IMG_7362

More up and down, around and around!!!

IMG_7371           Another stop to check out the Becker Butte Overlook.

IMG_7376 Fantastic…….

IMG_7381           Is it just me or do you see a turtle head in that rock?

IMG_7392 Now they tell us!!!!

IMG_7386At long last you can see out into the valley!!! But were still not down!

We got into ShowLow at about 3:30 PM, stopped at the Chamber of Commerce to ask about RV spots for a couple of days. The guy there directed us to Fool Hallow Lake State Rec Area, which turns out to be right near the center of town but is very secluded in the pine trees. Yes, pine trees!!!! A bit of a change from the cactus in the desert around Benson!!!

Speaking of change…………..remember the shorts and t-shirts?? Well they have been replaced by jeans, sweatshirts and jackets!!!! The temperature is expected to be below freezing with a strong possibility of SNOW!!!! Yikes!!

Sun Drawing Till next time, just us kids out here on the road!
