Bitter Lake NWR

After almost 2 years we are finally on the road again …….hurray!

We arrived at Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge near Roswell, New Mexico on Saturday, April 5th after an uneventful drive over from Hondo, TX. We left on Friday and stayed overnight in the Walmart parking lot in Carlsbad, NM and came into the Refuge Saturday morning.

After getting all set up and power, water and sewer hooked up, we drove the seven miles into Roswell for lunch at Chili’s and to just look around. It appears that Roswell has everything we will need, including a Hobby Lobby……again hurray!!!

Then it was back to the Refuge to meet with Steve Alvarez, law enforcement officer and volunteer services coordinator. Steve introduced us to the workings of the Visitor’s Center and then took us on a drive around the refuge. I think we will be very happy here for the next three months.

I will take pictures and post them so you can see where we are and what we are doing here. The wildlife here consists mainly of ducks, sandhill cranes, and birds. Of course there are coyotes, bobcats, and lots of rattlesnakes, so we will be watching where we step!

As you can see we are definitely in the high desert, the only trees are a few that have been planted around the area. It is very quiet and peaceful, even though the wind blows most all the time.

In my next post I will have pictures of the Visitor’s Center and any wildlife I see.

Just Us Kids……volunteering again!!!
