On Friday I was on duty at the Visitor Center and Bill was the guide at Chesser Island Homestead, when at about 3:00 I got a call from Sarah at the Fire Cache. She said our “main awning was torn and laying on the ground!!!!!”
Yikes!!!!
The main awning is a “self-retracting” model and when the wind blows it will roll up automatically…..or at least that’s the theory!!!
So I radioed Bill at the Homestead telling him to close up and head home and I headed home too! As others heard the call on the radio we were met at the motor home by another volunteer, Bill C. and his wife, Ida May, as well as Sarah from the fire crew.
It turns out that the stitching on the horizontal seam of the canvas had rotted and given way in the wind, so the awning roller fell to the ground and ripped out the stitching at the seam!!!! It took all of us to get the canvas down and tie up the arms to the side of the coach, then we sat down to assess the situation!!!
After some phone calls on Saturday, we found Bob Mitchell in St. Mary’s, GA who makes and repairs sails and awnings. We took the awning pieces to him today and he is confident that he can make it look good as new!!!! Yay! We also found another guy who will come out here to the refuge and help us re-install it and adjust it!!!
So all will be OK in the end, and now all we can do is laugh and get it fixed!!!! Such is life on the road in a motor home!!!
Just Us Kids……………without shade for awhile!!!

Oooooooo..........that's funny!!!!
Hey you two - Jim and Sharon Gutherie have the name and number of someone local (in Hondo) that will redo ALL your awnings with something like heavy fishing line stuff that is guaranteed - they said they are very reasonable - I think that David and I will have to get ours done too :)
