On Wednesday, June 30th we met up again with Donna and we all joined John and Nancy for lunch at Evangello’s in Wasilla.
John and I had worked together until my retirement in 2000 and it was so good to see him again and to finally meet his wife, Nancy, whom John always referred to as “She Who Must Be Obeyed”! We spent several hours visiting, reminiscing the old times and catching up on current lives.
We all parted and we headed back to Palmer and our RV park when John called to tell me that they had left a “bag” of low-bush cranberries (lingonberries) at Donna’s for us. I had mentioned that I love lingonberries and they grow in abundance in Alaska. Well, the “bag” turned out to be a large bag filled with a lot of smaller bags of berries. Can hardly wait start cooking them up into delicious goodies!!
On Thursday AM we headed to Donna’s again for another day of touring. First was a fast trip to Talkeetna and then we picked up a deli lunch for the road and headed up over Hatcher Pass.
Soon we were up in the clouds, climbing higher…..
…..that’s the road down there!
A local resident………..
…….a couple of beaver lodges.
Still climbing………
Streams working their way to the Matanuska River.
The views are totally fantastic.
And, of course, more wildflowers!!!
It was another great day with our friend Donna, she is an excellent tour guide as well as a great friend.
But like all good things, our time here is ending. It was time to say good-by and start our trip out of Alaska and head back to through Canada to the lower 48! So amid many hugs and promises to stay in touch we left Donna with bags of Alaska souvenirs she gave us to remember our visit, as if we could ever forget!!!
And of course, our lingonberries from John and Nancy!
Thank you all for making our trip to your wonderful state so memoraable.
Next…………the trip southward so stay tuned!
Just Us Kids……………..heading out!!!
