We drove into Fairbanks from Eielson AFB and visited the Museum of the North on the campus of the University of Alaska at Fairbanks, which is a great place to get a ‘feel’ for the culture and beauty of Alaska. Here is where you learn about the gold miners, and it is great lesson in how the Alaska Natives lived and struggled for survival.
Art is where you find it, such as this arch made entirely of shed moose and caribou antlers.
I love this bicycle rack……….
I wish I could say that I was able to take pictures of all the animals in the wild, but………………!!! These are part of the display in the museum, but it is probably as close as I will get to any of them!
Our national bird, the Bald Eagle.
the beaver……..
the great grizzly bear……….
and of course, the polar bear.
Look…they invited Bill to the 1909 Exposition in Seattle, too bad he wasn’t even born yet!!!
I love the Native artwork……..
a beautiful woven ceremonial shawl…….
charcoal drawing……
fabulous bead work…………….…..if only I had the patience to create such beautiful works of art!!
Couldn’t resist this picture…….hmmmm!!!
After the museum we headed over to the UAF Large Animal Research Center……but it started to rain so we only stayed long enough to take pictures of the muskox.
The rain continued for the next 3 days, but we are going into Fairbanks again today with our rain parkas and hats to see the rest of the sights before we head southward to Denali National Park.
Just Us Kids……………playing in the rain!!!
