Palo Duro Canyon in Texas

Today the wind stopped, the sun broke through the clouds and it was a perfect day to visit Palo Duro Canyon which is just south and a little west of Amarillo, TX.

So we laced up our hiking boots, got out the fanny packs, packed a lunch with lots of water and headed into the canyon.

Awesome………………!!!!!

But we weren’t the only turkeys on the trail!!!

There are a number of “water crossings” on the drive in the bottom of the canyon…..this one was the deepest, but our trusty Suzuki made the crossing like an old pro!!

                                          A neat stack of boulders…….IMG_2977

There are a number of cabins throughout the canyon that were built by the CCC’s back in the 1930’s. They are now available for rent,  bring your sleeping bag and cooking gear, but they are air conditioned.

Then we tackled the 6 mile round-trip trail to the Lighthouse!!!

So many sights to see along the trail…………..

This is the lower part of the trail…….

After a lot of walking we finally got to the Lighthouse (almost). The last part of the trail is a very, very steep climb and we, wisely, decided this was far enough!!!

Now why didn’t we think of this form of transportation??? IMG_3070

There were also a lot of mountain bikers on the trail……we have  bikes but we didn’t think we were ready for that!!!

A rest stop on the way back down!!

It was a long hard climb but the day was beautiful and it felt so good to be outdoors enjoying nature at her finest.

                   flowerbar

Of course, I had to include wildflowers I found on the hike. They were everywhere as Texas is in full bloom now!!!
