Last Saturday we took a drive to Whidbey Island, which is a beautiful island in Puget Sound, north of Seattle. Whidbey Island is home to Naval Air Station Whidbey which was Bill’s first duty station after completing basic and aviation prep training. He joined the Navy to see the world and gets stationed 100 miles from home!!!
There are 2 ways onto the island, one is to drive up I5 to Burlington, westward on Hwy 20, then onto the island over beautiful Deception Pass at the north end of the island. The other route is by ferry at the south end of the island. We decided to drive over the Pass and hope for some pictures, unfortunately the fog obscured everything and so, no pictures!!
The purpose for our drive was to visit an old Navy buddy, Earl, who was stationed with Bill in the Philippines and at NAS Lemoore in California.

Earl and Carol with son, Chris
It had been many years since we had been together so we were really excited to see them.
We went to lunch then drove around Oak Harbor to see all the changes and to find something that was familiar after all the intervening years.
Carol has so many beautiful flowers in her yard which of course I could not resist, as we all know how much I love flowers. Here are a few for your enjoyment.
Pink Delphinium Fuschia
Delicate Pink Fuschia
Hibiscus
Lilies
Dahlia
Salmon Rose
Elephant Garlic Blossom
(We brought home some of the very “aromatic” garlic which made out car smell like an Italian restaurant!!)
We had a great visit and it was hard to say good-by again, but promises were made to get together again very soon.
We decided to head down the island and take the ferry back to Mukilteo which will cut time off the trip home. Along the way we caught a fantastic sunset which is a common sight here.
It was late when we got home but the trip was worth every mile. To see old friends and to visit “old stomping grounds” is always the greatest adventure of all!
Just us kids……reminiscing!
