Bad Day On The Road

We left Show Low, AZ this morning at 8:00 AM headed for Holbrook to tour the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest National Park.

The wind had started to blow during the night and got progressively worse the further we drove. The trip was only about 90 miles, but it took us 2.5 hours because of the wind and blowing sand!!!!

Along the road we encountered about 8 trucks carrying wind turbines who had pulled off the road because of the wind.

We checked into an the OK RV Park in Holbrook and set out in the car to visit the sights.

There is a “haze” of dust in the air, clouding all the pix.

We should really have stayed home as the wind was so strong that we had trouble standing up, let alone hike and the dust was blinding. Bill braved the wind to try for some better pix….no luck!

So unfortunately we did not get much out of the Painted Desert or  the Petrified Forest. I guess it will have to wait until next time when the wind is not gusting to 60 mph and the dust is not sandblasting our bodies and faces!!!!

We did enjoy the exhibits in the museum and the Painted Desert Inn National Historical Landmark (both of which were indoors). We visited with the Volunteers at both places and exchanged stories of the various locations we have volunteered.

We decided to just hunker down in the coach and stay warm and cozy for the rest of the afternoon which proved to be a wise decision as now it is raining with thunder and lightning!!

Just us Kids…..warm and cozy in the Rollin’ Ranch House

The lighted panels look like a quilt. What a neat place!
